The “Malteser” are familiar with Europe and call Europe their home. Europe is, of course, a relatively safe and prosperous continent. But not everywhere! In 1989 and the subsequent years, the political turnaround in the East significantly changed the face of Europe as a whole. With the end of decades-long communist rule, the extent of needs suddenly became visible. The Malteser Relief Service mobilized its helpers, and put its expertise and material resources at the service of the affected people. To give this aid a sustainable perspective, it founded independent Malteser relief organizations in 13 Central and Eastern European countries between 1989 and 1996. To this day, groups from the foreign service maintain partnerships with many of these organizations. We want to report on this and, from this perspective, examine the “Europe” of asynchrony and emergency relief in our workshops.
