Starting in Kassel’s Nordstadt district, we’ll explore downtown Kassel and the history of this former royal seat. With over 200,000 residents, Kassel ranks 40th among Germany’s major cities. Approximately 333,000 people live in the greater Kassel area.
From Wilhelmshöher Allee, we look out over Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the largest mountain park in Europe and is known for its water features (every Wednesday, Sunday, and on holidays from May 1 through October 3).
Following in the footsteps of the Brothers Grimm, we head to the Weinberg to enjoy the view of the Karlsaue and a unique panorama of Kassel. Spanning 150 hectares, the baroque Karlsaue State Park is the perfect place for a stroll close to downtown. On a short detour, we pass the Orangerie Palace.
Back in downtown Kassel, we discover the many traces of the documenta international art exhibition, which takes place in Kassel every five years.
