How’s Europe?

Cartoon Workshop with Stephan Rürup

Europe is under pressure: Authoritarian movements are gaining influence, democratic rights are being questioned, and wars, the climate crisis, and social divisions shape the everyday lives of many young people. At the same time, new forms of resistance, solidarity, and democratic engagement are emerging all over Europe.

In the workshop “How is Europe Doing?”, young people from Kassel are meeting international youth groups. Together, we ask: How do we experience (authoritarian) developments in Europe? What concerns, hopes, and visions of the future do we associate with Europe? And how can these experiences be translated into powerful images?

Supported by cartoonist Stephan Rürup, participants create their own cartoons: critical, witty, thoughtful, or provocative. Input sessions, discussions, exhibition visits, and drawing phases alternate. In this way, the workshop combines political and cultural education: discussing, drawing, and sharpening the ideas and thoughs of young people. The final pieces will later be exhibited publicly – both in print and online. This will make young perspectives on Europe visible, in Kassel and beyond. The workshop language is English.

The workshop takes place on Friday and Saturday. It is aimed at young people between the ages of 14 and 27.

It is a cooperation by Evangelische Akademie Hofgeismar, Caricatura – Galerie für Komische Kunst and EUROPE DIRECT NordOstHessen at Regierungspräsidium Kassel.
